Using diagrams
Diagrams are to paper folding what music scores are to music: a universal tool to understand what are the different steps to achieve a complete folding.

The folds and elementary gestures are gathered in the « folder repertoire », a collection of more or less standardized symbols. If a certain de facto normalization exists, debates still agitate the paper folding and folding community: content of the repertoire, shape and size of the arrows, layout of the vignettes, (un) controlled appellation of actions, type of dashes for the folds...
The key is to understand the features represented, and not to be stopped by minor differences

Some tips :
- have at hand a repertoire of the folder, in order to understand the meaning of each symbol.
- before making the first fold, look at the entire diagram, to identify the crucial steps.
- know how to differentiate the preparation folds (arrow back and forth), the folds to be done (simple arrow) and the marker lines (often traces of folds made previously).
- look closely at each vignette, noting all the details (reference points, shape, colors, plots). Sometimes a tiny detail will be of great importance.
- be careful that a thumbnail shows two states of folding: the result of the execution of the previous thumbnail, and what to do to move to the next thumbnail.
- to understand fold(s) presenton a thumbnail, systematically look at the following sticker(s) to see how should look like the result. It's a habit to take that will help you understand what you need to do.
- scrupulously respect the folding sequence proposed by the author: there is no point in skipping steps thinking that we will save time!
- get used to using diagrams without explanatory text. When the diagrams are well done, the explanations are useless. Moreover, this habit makes it possible to understand folds explained in any language, and thus to be interested in the creators of all the countries.
