Fractals
A fractal figure, or « fractal », is, as a first approximation, a curve, a surface, a volume of irregular or fragmented form that is created following deterministic or stochastic rules involving an internal homothety. This term « fractal » is a neologism created by the mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot in 1974 from the Latin root « fractus », which means broken, irregular. Mandelbrot sets form extraordinarily beautiful figures.
For more information, please refer to the article Fractale

There are many examples of fractal folds that aim to reveal a smaller and smaller size pattern within the same model. These folds can be made from a single sheet or be modular, 2D or 3D.

The first example of 3D fractal is due to the mathematician Menger, who created the sponge that bears his name. If there are many achievements of menger sponges of order 1 or 2 in origami, only two models of order 3 are known ( Jeanine Mosely and Michel Lucas ) and only one model of order 4 ( Serena Cicalò ).

Serena Cicalò's fourth order sponge consists of approximately 21 km of paper strips 1.2 cm wide, in three colors. The cube is approximately 1 m wide and weighs approximately 25 kg. Its construction lasted 15 months! If you want more details, download the document « The PJS technique and the construction of the first origami level-4 Menger sponge » by Serena Cicalò, who has agreed to make it available.
